and asked to stay the night
and while he didn’t respond right away
he knew the answer
before she had asked the question.
“I’m not the one,” he said
“It ain’t me, babe.”

“I can’t go for that,” he explained,
“No can do.
You can go your own way.”
He knew

they wouldn’t be able to work it out.

“Take a look at me now,”
he told her,
“It’s just a shame,
that’s all.”
She didn’t like it.
She didn’t have to.
He sent her off.
“Get back to where you once belonged.”

“I don’t know why you say goodbye,
she responded
closing the door
behind her.
“Pretty nice girl,” he thought
alone.
Later
she came in
through the bathroom window

but that’s a story for another day
