Saturdays in Summer

When I married you
I was optimistic.
When I married you
I thought it was forever.
When I married you
I thought it would make you happy
that it was what you wanted
that you’d be into it
until the end of your days.

I am so saddened
to see how wrong I was
and that my marrying you
did not succeed
as admirably as I had hoped
and that the imminent divorce
is as desired
as the other thing had been.

I wish I had married you better
and promise I will
when you next ask me
to perform the service.
