You look like you’re trying to have something to say
something important to say
when in fact, you’ve really got nothing to say
nothing important to say
you know what I’m saying?
You seem like you’re struggling
to speak like it’s really important
like your words have some kind of meaning
like your life might have some kind of meaning;
if you get what I mean.
Not everyone speaks with significance.
Not everyone hits in the mark.
Not ev-er-y singleton last individual has quite that un-i-que spark.
You might be the sort who will just spit it out
and hope that you’ll be understood.
We couldn’t all be Great Communicators;
but we’ve all tried the best that we could.
He looked like he swallowed something important,
a pretty magnificent thing.
I’ll bet that the mightily substantial thing
that he swallowed had a quite zesty zing!
The text they composed for their next syllabi
had it just been accepted, though perhaps quite dry,
would have stunned all the students, and left them wide-eyed
and amazed for the rest of the terms of their lives!
If one says what one has to say,
just SPIT IT OUT!
Get it done, quickly and clear.
Don’t worry, don’t fuss, do not agonize.
No need to succumb to dumb fear.
We can’t all be Great Communicators;
the best are a very small breed
but if you at least put in effort,
then your listeners surely will heed.
