…When You Play…

…WHEN YOU PLAY…

It’s the greatest show. You have to watch it!
It’s not starting for another few weeks.
Yeah, but it’s got great source material.
Please don’t make me watch that show.
Have I ever steered you wrong?
You have steered me wrong over and over again.
Have I steered you wrong this week?
…What it’s called?
Game of Thrones. It’ll be the best show you’ve ever seen.
It’s the best show we’ve NEVER seen.
"When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die."
Do you get paid to promote this show?
Yes, I do.
Can I get in on the action…?

Being Bald

BEING BALD

I cut myself shaving today.
You’d think that
bald
there would be less to shave
but how do you think
that baldness is maintained?

It takes vigilance and effort
to remain so clean
and when you’re as slothful as I
it ain’t easy.

I pay little attention when shining my head
and often feel the nick of frustration
that I’ll soon have to bandage my brain pan
to protect from pus.

The scrapes and scabs on my skull
easily fade
and I forget
how easily
they are resurrected.

I have inadvertently mastered mutilation
all in the face of fashion.
I am not alone in this;
I just wish I were much less effective.

Air Traffic Controller

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

Steel bound,
fuel soaked
explosive and dangerous,
this is not what I was promised
in first dreams.
These skies are not friendly.
They are policed.

Straps and restraints
reframe the experience.
This is not flying.
This is something else again
a pale facsimile of the real thing
that thing from first dreams
with the air blasting skin
and gravity lightly yielding
to the will of the flyer.

It is not flight in your metal coffin
while servants run about the place
offering all the comforts of home
like salty nuts in a tiny sack.
It is not true unless naked.
it is not right with constraints.
It is not flight without freedom.

Baby Just Sent Me A

BABY JUST SENT ME A

Your vacation pictures
placed so daintily
in your electronic album
available online
are beautiful.

I know you were nervous to fly
but
it seems
getting away did you some good.
You look so happy
so far away.

You are leaning left in many of the shots
unbalanced in your Hunter green boots
as you smile to your right
wistfully.

It’s not the photographer
you’re looking at
or the people in frame with you
but you will regularly stare out there.

Your pale eyes are piercing something
someone who I can’t see.
Who is it?
You do not look at me like that.
I don’t think you ever have.

You look so good in the pictures.
Welcome home
I’m glad you enjoyed your trip.

Copper Gold

COPPER GOLD

The paperweight is pointless.
It rests on a desk I never use
since Uncle Marvin deeded me
his hand me down laptop
and the papers laying
underneath the copper pot of gold
may be important
but they are ignored.
I can see the dust on that first paper
and a date that coincides
roughly
with our later conversations.

The weight itself,
though,
collects no dust.
It gets wiped regularly
– just when, I can’t recall.

I do recall when you won it
at your niece’s school’s raffle
(I don’t remember the grand prize)
and how you thought I coveted it
when really,
I was just checking out your profile.

It was the first thing you ever gave me

And my house is filled with hand-me-downs,
items that hold many memories
from earlier owners
that I know nothing about.

There are many objects far newer
than your copper pot of gold
that I get greater use from.
My home houses so many things
that clutter the space
that need to be exorcised.
Your gift is not one of them.

It is one of so very few
I was led to
by a rainbow
and I will never let it tarnish.

BMA

BMA

You’re doing all right with what you’ve got
but make the real choice; get off the pot.
You can be more awesome; totally.
Be more awesome, like me.

The secret is simple; just follow my lead
and assume that if you have a need, I can feed.
Just be more awesome and you’ll grow like a tree.
Be more awesome like me.

Get started by aping my fashion and walk.
My dating style? I’m a rich chickenhawk.
Just give them kids candy like lunch that is free
and you’ll be more awesome like me.

Relinquish to me and your troubles will end
is the finest advice you’ll receive, my new friend.
It’s served me so well – what? This message Re:
Be more awesome like me.

You’re not the first to whom this has been said
– in fact, once, I had to be told it instead
of informing those who’d not been able to see
how to be more awesome like me.

Eventually you will succumb to the task
or being a hero for ages to pass
by acepting this phrase as my final decree:
Be more awesome, like me.

Hanging on the Telephone

HANGING ON THE TELEPHONE

If I still had your phone number
I wouldn’t call.
I would not use it
to reach out
unless it were an emergency
like a Thursday
or any other day that rhymed with it.

I wouldn’t reach out to you
not after all this time
not with how the last words.
I would stay out of your hair
off of your line
far from your personal space.
I’ve been doing a good job of it lately,
haven’t I?

Just give me your phone number
please
and I’ll continue
to leave you alone.

Spore

SPORE

"I don’t want to be pretty no more,"
she said, to no one in particular
muttering in the darkened day,
hoping someone might listen.
She was still pretty enough
to engage attention
on some topics
so we spoke of the change of weather
in the Fall.

"I was just listening to the floor."
she said, on the ground
ale stains speckled her tight top
from where she’d tried to dance
too late in the evening
with too full a glass.
I helped her up,
helped her out the door
and into a cab
and away from what memories she could retain
of yet another escapade.

"Don’t think of me as your whore,"
she said, in the morning after
the night before
and I agreed
as, in the harsh new light,
I wasn’t sure
I wanted to think of her at all.

But I did.
She remained with me
in some form
after she left for a train
with ale stained lips
with which she said,
"our time together
will end as lore."

Wild Girl

WILD GIRL

The wild girl from high school
that crazy kid
who was always up for anything
and anyone
and couldn’t care less what you thought
who fought like a tiger
and fucked like a freight train
and fell like a comet
in regular galactic rotation,
she can be found
fatter
off of Forty third,
selling real estate
when not hauling her kids to karate.

Traci got normal.
Traci grew up,
though you didn’t see it,
couldn’t imagine it,
the girl that made school
so educational,
is gone,
replaced by a matronly mom.

She doesn’t talk about the old days
doesn’t talk to the old crew
unless they’ve proven
they can supply the twenty percent down.
It’s not that she doesn’t trust;
she just doesn’t know,
you know?

Traci, that wild girl,
disappeared into apocrypha
even as you desperately
seek her still.

Placeholder

PLACEHOLDER

You may not love me
or even want me
but
I may serve
until the right thing comes along.

I could be your consolation prize
your temp gig.
I could be what gets you through the night
when you have nothing else.

And,
if you were to like it,
if you grew to care,
if I grew on you
in some way
at some time,
well, that would be all right.
